Speaking of one of my favorite Dead tunes....

I've always found it difficult to find really great versions. I tend to like the snappier, faster-played versions they did in the early 70's when the song first came out (there's a Dick's Pix from '73--forget which one--that has my favorite version to this point)...rather than the longer, slower, ponderous versions that came in the years to come.

I do recall having an old tape, though, long since lost, that MAY have been from 1985, that had an incredible kick ass Jimmy on it. Now, I've brought this up before, and everyone points me to this Deer Creek show in '85....no offense, but that aint it!!

I've heard that version a number of times and still don't understand what people like about it--it's slower than molasses in January and Jerry completely mumbles his way thru the first verse....just sounds awful....I think the reason people like it is b/c it starts to pick up at the very end w/the repeating "I say row..." verses but by then, i've lost interest.

BUT...if anyone out there has an idea of the stellar RJ i'm talking about--again, not SURE it's from an '85 show but that's the best recollecton I have...please let me know where to find it again. It contains a jam going into the "Broken heart don't feel so bad" verse that's just spine tingling, and the crowd really reacts to it.

Beyond that, I'll take ANY suggestions on where to find great ROW's and really appreciate it.

(oh, and yes, the Nassau 1-10-79 version is a winner, as is that entire show. Contains my favorite Shakesdown ever!)

Thanks in advance...

GC

I bet it's 6-25-85 in Cuyahoga Falls- Blossom Music Center. That Row Jimmy is excellent.

oops. That may have been the one I was referring to at first, Pat. My bad if so. I think a lot of people mentioned that one and I mistakenly said it was deer creek. Give a listen back to the Cuahoga Falls and tell me if Jerry doesn't mess up and mumble thru verse one, and isn't it a rather slow to develop version?

I need to listen myself and keep these Jimmys straight before saying which ones I like and don't. If I was mistaking C. Falls w/Deer Creek my apologies to Purple Gel...

anyway, i'm trying the 10-28-85 Fox version next to see.

Haha- he does indeed stumble through some lyrics. To me, though, that's incidental. I have an extreme prejudice in favor of that entire show. Have you ever listened to the whole thing? If you haven't, I bet you'll love it.

will try. I admit i never could get past the RJ, and assumed it was indicative of the whole show.

I have a lower tolerance for blown lyrics than a lot of Dead Heads; just have always been that way.
